?　　任何一個譯員在著手合同翻譯前都需要讀懂原文，這也是合同翻譯的首要條件。合同語言不象文學語言那么有豐富的趣味性，而是十分枯燥、乏味的，句子又長、術語也多，理解上又頗費功夫。如何草草了事的話，翻譯出來的合同肯定是不符合客戶要求的。因此要提高合同翻譯能力必須先讀懂合同，而讀懂合同必須先了解其中的專門用語。
　　1、 Hereby: by means of; by reason of this 之意，即特此，因此，茲等意。常用于法律文件、合同協議的正式文件的開頭語，在條款中需要強調時也可用。
　　2、Hereto: to this，上文已提及的，比如表示“本合同雙方”可以說“the Parties hereto”,這里的hereto表示“to this Contract” “本協議附件4”可以譯為“Appendix 4 hereto”，這里的hereto表示“to this Agreement”。
　　3、Herein: in this 此中，于此。表示上文已提及的….，如遇到“本合同（中）的….”，“本法（中）的……”等行文時，用該詞。比如，“本法（中）所稱的不正當競爭，….”可以譯為“unfair competition mentioned herein….此中的herein 意為“in this law”  又如“本協議（中）的內容”，可譯為“the contents herein”,此中的herein 意為“ in this Agreement”.
　　4、Therein: in that; in that particular context; in that respect. 在那里；在那點上，在那方面等之意，表示上文已提及的，“合同中的……..”“工程中的…….”等可用此詞。如“修補工程中的缺陷”，可以譯為“the remedying of any defects therein”, 此中的therein 表示“ in the Works”; 又如“用于工程中的材料或機械設備”可譯為“materials or plant for incorporation therein”， 此中的therein 也表示“ in the Works”。
　　5、and/or
　　常用 and/or 英譯合同中“甲和乙+甲或乙”的內容，這樣就可避免漏譯其中的一部分。
　　例 ：如果上述貨物對船舶和（或）船上其它貨物造成任何損害，托運人應負全責。
　　The shipper shall be liable for all damage caused by such goods to the ship and/or cargo on buard.
　　6、 by and between
　　常用 by and between 強調合同是由“雙方”簽訂的，因此雙方必須嚴格履行合同所賦于的責任。
　　7、not(no)later than 
 用“not (no) later than +日期”英譯“不遲于某月某日”。
　　例 ：本合同簽字之日一個月內，即不遲于 12 月 15 日，你方須將貨物裝船。
　　Party B shall ship the goods within one month of the date of signing this Contract, i.e. not later than December 15.
